Burdekin Flys The Queensland Flag in Victoria

Horse:
BURDEKIN BLUES
Owners: Mr Tom Sheehan
Trainer: Barry Baldwin (Eagle Farm)
Breeding: b/br g Sequalo - Winsome Blue (by Blue Run)
Purchased At: $32,000 Yearling Purchase 2006 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

Brilliant Queensland sprinter Burdekin Blues ventured south to conquer all comers at Flemington during the month of November.

The victory was recorded in the Listed $150,000 Grazia Stakes over the straight 1100m course with Shane Scriven in the saddle.

The Barry Baldwin prepared five year-old bounced straight to the front before dashing away from his 12 rivals to score by almost 2 lengths.

The win wasn’t Burdekin Blues first interstate victory. He ventured to Randwick earlier in the year to dominate in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes.

Judging by his Flemington and Randwick wins, Burdekin Blues is likely to head south again in the near future.

Burdekin Blue’s Flemington win brought up career win number nine from just sixteen career starts.

Burdekin Blues is by the highly successful Queensland sire Sequalo, who stands at the Kruger families Lyndhurst Stud at Warwick.

Sequalo continues to prove to be a fantastic winner producer, with Burdekin Blues now one of his star performers.

Sequalo has now produced some 422 winners from 657 starters, which represents an impressive 64% winners to runners ratio.

Of those winners, 13 have been at stakes level, with a further 10 stakesplaced.

Burdekin Blues is out of the stakes placed Blue Run mare Winsome Blue.

Winsome Blue was another flying machine who won 16 races between 800m-1030m.

Her lone stakes placing came when runner up in the Group 3 Lightning Handicap at Eagle Farm behind the grey flyer Cangronde.

Burdekin Blues was an inexpensive $32,000 yearling buy out of the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2006 Yearling Sale for trainer Barry Baldwin.

Burdekin Blues is owned outright by Tom Sheehan, a Barry Baldwin supporter for close to thirty years.

Whilst there have been several handy gallopers to carry the Sheehan colours, Burdekin Blues is certainly the flag bearer for the duo.

As the name suggests, Sheehan named Burdekin Blues after the small North Queensland region of Burdekin.

But it’s unlikely Sheehan as the blues with his top sprinter, who is proving to be a wonderful money spinner.

At the time of writing Sheehan has banked more than $440,000, with the promise of much more to come.

2009/2010 Owners Of The Month Award is proudly sponsored by Brisbane Horse Transport.
