Five on end for Meet George

Horse:
MEET GEORGE
Owners: Mrs Billie Morton
Trainer: Brian Smith (Eagle Farm)
Breeding: b g Rock Of Cashel (IRE) - Jane Jetson (NZ ) (by Jetball)
Purchased At: Retained by breeder.

Billie Morton is no stranger to winning. Her progressive home bred galloper Meet George has given the matriarch of the Morton family enormous satisfaction of late earning her the Owners of the Month Award for August 2010.

Billie Morton has carried on the racing tradition of late husband Barry, a big punter and larger than life owner with a passion for horses.

That passion also burns strong Billie’s son Glen and daughter in law Lisa, who race and breed a large string of horses throughout Australia.

Their current flag bearer is this year’s Royal Ascot visitor Gold Trail, and also includes the talented mare Acquired.

Meet George comes from humble beginnings – far from Royal Ascot.

He is by Beaudesert based stallion Rock of Cashel, a member of the Willowbend Stud stallion roster alongside the evergreen Clang.

The Morton family have been strong supporters of the Willowbend stallions which have an uncanny knack of producing something, from very little.

Meet George is no different.

The five year-old bay gelding is out of the Jetball mare Jane Jetson, a Gosford winner and Randwick runner up who also carried the Morton colours.

His pedigree page is lacking in black type. But that hasn’t stopped Meet George from stringing five wins together, commencing at the Gold Coast in June.

Meet George earned connections the August Owner of the Month Award for an Eagle Farm and Doomben win during the month.

The five win sting of Meet George is also a triumph for clever Eagle Farm trainer Brian Smith.

Smith has a wealth of experience and plenty of miles under is belt, but is still best known as the trainer of mighty Kiwi galloper Balmerino.

In more recent times, Smith has worked his way up the Brisbane trainer’s ladder and in doing so has carved out an impressive strike rate.

The Morton trophy cabinet might need to make room for some more silverware, with Meet George now seemingly bound for black type.

Meet George has some tough acts to follow, with the Morton black type list including Group 1 wins for Prized Gem (Gr 1 Brisbane Cup) and her AJC Derby winning son Nom De Jeu.
