Fasliyev Dancer coasts to victory
07-Jul-2010: FORMER Marian man Rosco Jessop had to do some swift talking to convince his fellow owners to bring their Gold Coast-based horse Fasliyev Dancer north for the carnival.
But the long trip paid dividends when the five-year-old mare stormed home late to win the $50,000 Mackay Property Maintenance 2010 Newmarket (1250m) at Ooralea yesterday.
“I managed to talk the owners into coming up for this,” Jessop said after collecting the trophy for the feature sprint.
“They wanted to stay down south for the Glasshouse (1400m at Caloundra last Saturday),” he said.
“She's going to stay in North Queensland for another run at least. She'll go to Townsville for the Cleveland Bay (1200m).”
Most of the other owners of the horse, trained by Trevor Bailey on the Gold Coast, are based at Victoria.
Jessop is the self-proclaimed mayor of Rollingstone, about 50km from Townsville, but grew up at Marian before leaving at the age of 17.
So, he was thrilled to win a big race in his old “hometown”. He's also excited about her chances in the Cleveland Bay.
Fasliyev Dancer ($4.20-fav), ridden by Ric McMahon, might have a new racing pattern after finishing strongly down the outside yesterday.
Usually a leader, she missed the start before finishing strongly for sixth at Ipswich last start.
And despite instructions to lead yesterday, she made her winning run from back off the hot speed.
“She was beaten early by the speedsters again,” Jessop said.
Former Sydney horse Koichi led but was headed soon after they straightened by Mt Isa horse Heart, which had tracked the leader in second to the turn.
Mackay horse Don Caudillo, trained by John Manzelmann, then loomed as a big danger before Fasliyev Dancer chimed in on the outside to dash local hopes.
She won by a half-length to Don Caudillo ($16), with former Group One winner Reigning To Win ($51), now trained in Dubbo, flashing home late a short half-head back in third in a welcome return to form.
Jessop has been a part-owner of the winner since she was bought as a yearling.
She was initially trained by Peter Moody but all of her wins have come since transferring to Bailey on the Gold Coast.
“This is her 10th win. We are chasing some black type for her breeding prospects,” Jessop said.
The win marked a riding double for McMahon, who had also won the previous race, the Pioneer Lakes Class 2 (1250m), on Rockhampton horse Exorcize ($21), trained by Paul Curtis.
But riding honours for the day belonged to Anthony Patillo, who rode the first three winners of the afternoon.
The second leg of his treble was Craiglea Tina ($9), which won the QTIS 600 2YO (1250m).
It was another Craiglea show, with runners from the stud filling the first four placings in the race.
Craiglea Tina, trained by Peter Fleming, beat Craiglea Royale ($4.40) by a long-head, with Craiglea Edge ($4.40) one-and-a-half lengths back in third.
Craiglea Sherry ($13) was not far away in fourth.
