OWNERS OF THE MONTH
|
December 2009
Toowoomba Filly Rewards Owner/Breeder
Horse: CHAKVETADZE
Owners: Dr John Hooper
Trainer: Michael Nolan (Toowoomba)
Breeding: br m Taimazov (ARG) - Gotha (by Rustic Amber (IRE))
Purchased At: Retained by breeder after being passed in at 2007 Magic Millions.
Named after the Russian Tennis player Anna Chakvetadze, flying Toowoomba filly Chakvetadze returned to the track at Doomben on the 19th of December to extend her unbeaten run to seven wins from as many starts.
Few horses these days seem to be able to accumulate career wins totalling seven.
To do so from her first seven starts is an amazing performance by this Michael Nolan prepared mare.
Adding further merit to the win was the fact this was Chakvetadze’s first venture into open grade after winning her first six runs against her own age.
The 1010m field contained some smart types including another brilliant sprinter from Toowoomba in Azzaland, plus the Group 1 placed Gold Coast galloper Black Ink.
The win was a relief for connections after Chakvetadze was sent to the spelling paddock last preparation after injuring a tendon in a track gallop.
Chakvetadze is owned and bred by Toowoomba medical practitioner Dr John Hooper.
Chakvetadze was passed in as a yearling failing to reach her $20,000 reserve at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Hooper’s lack of fortune in the sales ring as now turned full circle, with Chakvetadze’s residual value soaring after her Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas win.
Chakvetadze is the eighth foal of the Rustic Amber mare Gotha who was a Kyneton two year-old winner.
Aside from Chakvetadze, Gotha’s other greatest claim was that she carried the colours of wealthy American businessman William Du Pont.
In the breeding barn, Gotha has been a successful producer with 8 of her 9 foals of racing age greeting the judge, with Chakvetadze the star of the show.
Chakvetadze has also been the lone shining light for her Argentinean bred sire Taimazov who stood at Darling Downs nursery Wattle Brae.
A son of More Than Ready’s sire Southern Halo, Taimazov has produced 29 winners from 92 starters.
But as is often the case, many stallions have one good horse in them, with Chakvetadze proving clearly the best advertisement for her sire.
2009/2010 Owners Of The Month Award is proudly sponsored by Brisbane Horse Transport.
