Queensland Owner Laurence Eales.
Bush Beat (Summer 09)
01-Dec-2009: Well that famous first Tuesday in November has come and gone for another year, and may I offer congratulations to Laurence and Prue Eales, the owners of Shocking.
I had the opportunity to interview Laurence on Radio TAB last spring when the other Eales Racing stable star Whobegotyou won the Caulfield Guineas, and then went on to run second to Rebel Raider in the Victoria Derby. Laurence told us about his days growing upin Cairns before relocating the family to Brisbane to oversee the many projects his earthmoving business has under way in South East Queensland.
I’m sure that many at Cannon Park,Cairns on Melbourne Cup day enjoyed their connection to the race that stops a nation. So too,I offer my congratulations to the many owners who won one of the 77 races conducted across 15 racecourses in Queensland on Cup day–you can all lay claim to having won a race on Melbourne Cup day, even if it wasn’t at famous Flemington!
We hear some wonderful stories on Bush Beat, and I’d like to share a "New Story" with you in this Owners Oracle.
In October,New Stories won her maiden at Cairns. The 4 year-old Show A Heart mare is raced bythe Twin Hills Good Sorts Syndicate, and for those who haven’t heard of Twin Hills, it’s located about 160 kilometres north-west of Clermont. (Twin Hills plays host to an annual rodeo, campdraft and raceday every September.)
Syndicate manager Jasmine Scharf told us on Bush Beat recently that there are 20 ladies in the Good Sorts syndicate who all come from around the region, and as is the case with many regional areas, they don’t get together as much as they would like,so a syndicate was formed with a view to racing a horse at Twin Hills.
The then unplaced mare was purchased fromthe Newcastle region and placed with John Manzelmann at Mackay. An inglorious last placing at Twin Hills didn’t deter the Good Sorts, and New Stories went on to post placings at Bowen and Mackay before breaking through at Cairns.
But that’s not where the story ends with New Stories –Jasmine told us how the syndicate had been fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service with raffles at the Twin Hills raceday, and now the Good Sorts are looking to contribute further to the R.F.D.S. by donating some of their mare’s prizemoneyto the vital service. All we need is for New Stories to hold up her end of the deal and keep the prizemoney cheques rolling in!
Well done to the Good Sorts and we wish you every success. Perhaps you may encourage others to similarly contribute to their favourite causes and everybody can be winners.
As always, here’s the plug…tune into Radio TAB at 1030am Tuesdays for "Bush Beat" for all the country news and results. Feel free to drop us a line with any news for the show – my email address is tony.clements@radiotab.com
Till the next Owners’ Oracle, may you enjoy the sweet taste of success that only an owner can know.
